About me and my practice
Hi! Im Emma and Im a person-centred therapist. Ive always gravitated towards wanting a career that matters to me. Throughout my studies I was interested in how people think, choosing topics that relate to mental health from school all the way up to my masters study. In hindsight it was so obvious I was going to be working in a field relating to supporting individuals, with therapy being the best possible field for me. I absolutely love the work I do, it is the biggest privilege being let into peoples personal worlds and seeing the immense growth of my clients.
My interest in people and mental health was further illuminated by my ADHD diagnosis at 27, which put a whole new perspective on my desire to understand. I have found neurodiverse clients gravitate towards me whether they are diagnosed or I have supported them with the diagnosis process, and now it all makes sense! Its so lovely being able to have that immediate understanding of things that neurotypical people just dont experience, saving the need to over explain and welcoming in supposed weirdness. This extends to disabilities outside of neurodiversity, as knowing what its like to navigate a world that is not catered to you is something that those without a disability dont have the same insight into. This goes hand in hand with my non-binary gender identity, allowing me to relate to LGBTQIA+ clients, sharing common experiences allowing me to just get it.
Experience
A lot of how I work centres around helping individuals to gain a sense of agency. You are the expert on yourself, so I am here to help you to hear yourself. Often we can feel what were saying makes no sense, but thats only because its so hard when you are completely immersed in the depth of your own world. As your therapist I am there to walk alongside you and to help you see what can be easy to miss, picking up on common themes, and supporting you through your difficulties with empathy and unconditional positive regard. I dont feel its fair to hide behind a professional facade so I will share my thoughts, opinions, and my experiences, allowing you to know me so we can develop a strong therapeutic relationship based on mutual trust and respect.
We will work together and regularly check in on whether the therapy is providing what you need, and how we can work together to meet your needs, whether that is long-term goals or session-by-session needs. Person-centred therapy doesn't have to be without structure, but equally, it can be completely without structure.
Allowing you to decide how sessions run and learning to trust your own intuition regarding what needs to be discussed is incredibly powerful and will help you long-term in listening to yourself and developing the coping mechanisms you need to thrive outside of therapy, as ultimately my role is to get you to the point wherein you no longer need therapy and to be your support until that is the case.
